School Requirements – Ready to Learn
On Time to Class – Reporting Absences
Everyday Counts ~ Every Minute Matters
Ready to Learn
Craigieburn Secondary College expects students to beReady to Learn by having a diary, laptop and pencil case in form assembly and taken to all classes unless the teacher informs otherwise. Other equipment necessary for subjects is checked by the subject teacher.
Diaries are a compulsory and important means of communication between parents and the college and will help explain issues of importance. As well as building student capacity in organisational and planning skills, parents can support their child by regularly checking the diary and recording comments for teachers. Laptops are used in all subjects at the College. Without a high percentage of students bringing laptops, teachers cannot utilise them to their full potential. Pencil cases are useful in carrying all necessary equipment.
At Craigieburn Secondary College we work together with the wider community to create a learning environment that fosters BELONGING, through mutual RESPECT, UNDERSTANDING, and personal GROWTH.
Please provide a note with an acceptable reason for your child to give to their form assembly teacher if your child is not ready to learn providing a valid reason and any requests for supports. Ready to Learn demerits may be issued at form assembly and by the classroom teacher, continued demerits will result in consequences being issued such as parent contact, after-school work sessions, principal detentions or parent meetings, as per the Ready to Learn Staged Response Process.
Late to Class
At CSC we expect our students to be punctual to all classes as a sign of respect to their learning and to their teachers. Teachers greet students that are lined up ready to learn and invite them into the classroom. Students who arrived late more than 10 minutes are redirected to the supervised Truancy Room to discuss and reflect on the importance of being on time to all sessions. Based on teacher roll marking a Late to Class demerit may be issued as part of the college Minor Behaviour Staged Response policy. We ask our parents and carers to have a conversation with your child to remind them of the college expectations for being on time to class/es and ready to learn for class/es.
If an unexplained lateness is explained by parent/carer or staff member, then attendance notes can be adjusted, and demerit notifications removed.
As part of the School Wide Positive Behaviour Supports (SWPBS) Framework and the college staged response processes, the identified minor behaviour/s (in this case Late to Class) in a school environment and classroom is a serious matter. It has a large implication on the learning of students and on how staff and other students feel at the college. The college staged response process for managing student minor behaviour/s is outlined below:
- A verbal reminder on the college classroom and school expectations.
- A verbal warning response after redirection of the behaviour in the classroom.
- A restorative conversation.
- A warning that parent/carer phone contact to occur.
- At times a teacher may resort to the withdrawal from class staged response process to manage the classroom misbehaviour so as to provide an opportunity for continued learning during the session.
- Parent/carer contact made and possible 60 min after school-work session scheduled.
- Parent/carer meeting required.
- Continued behaviour may incur a scheduled Assistant Principal Lunchtime detention.
- Consequences and support interventions actioned.
- Assistant Principal/Principal meeting for further behaviour support and interventions.
- Other actions deemed appropriate to the management of the student behaviour/s.
“You and your child are an important part of your school?s community. Every day of attending school counts. Being at school supports your child?s learning, social and mental wellbeing.” (DET, 2022).
